Roberto Zarate, Ph.D. is a faculty member in the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program, UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. He is also a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice. Prior to working in private practice, Dr. Zarate was a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA School of Medicine.
Dr. Zarate directed the Recovery After 1st Schizophrenia Episode (RA1SE) and the Individual Placement and Support Programs at the Wellness Center, San Fernando Mental Health Center. Prior to these positions, Dr. Zarate was a Staff Psychologist at the University of Chicago Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, and Director of Dual Diagnosis at Pacific Clinics in California. He has been Adjunct Faculty at Governor's State University in Chicago and at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles.
Dr. Zarate has doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Madrid (Spain) and from the State University of New York at Albany where he was mentored by David Barlow, Ph.D. He then completed a NIMH Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at UCLA Department of Psychology with Keith Nuechterlein, Ph.D. and Robert P. Liberman, M.D.
Dr. Zarate has conducted multiple research projects. He was awarded a “Seed” Grant at UCLA to study Prodromal Signs of Relapse in Schizophrenia, and has been a co-investigator on two major NIMH funded studies entitled Family Intervention for Severe Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders, and Treatment Adherence for Latinos with Schizophrenia: A Culturally Adapted Intervention. He has published over 40 journal articles and book chapters, and conducts trainings and seminars throughout the U.S., Latin America and Europe.
